1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
8 ounces smoked sausage, such as andouille or apple chicken sausage
1 cup chopped onion
1 red or green bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (4 ounces) mild green chili peppers
2 to 3 tablespoons diced jalapeno peppers, or to taste
2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes or fire-roasted tomatoes, undrained
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
1 teaspoon grill seasoning blend
2 to 3 tablespoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
In a large skillet or sauté pan, brown the ground beef and sausage with onion until meat is no longer pink.
Add the bell pepper and garlic and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute longer.
Transfer to the slow cooker and add remaining ingredients; cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours.
